QUITAPENAS. One word — all claps. Four syllables — all caps. The rhythmically contagious Afro-Latin combo from Los Angeles is here to help us celebrate the launch of our community-supported music project.
Born under the warm California sun, their inspiration is the radical 60s, 70s, and 80s — recalling the liberating evenings of Angola, Peru, Colombia, Brazil and beyond.
WHAT’S THE NAME MEAN?
Quitapenas means “to remove worries.” Everybody has a pena and the band’s mission is simple: to make you dance and leave you worriless. They are modern day curanderos, or healers, and their sets stem from this core, positive action — music as healing. dance as therapy. Tambor Terapía.
Every member of the group is a first-generation child of Mexican and Guatemalan immigrants, and they share a collective love of all kinds of Afro-Latin music: Cape Verdean funaná, Afro-Colombian champeta, Puerto Rican plena, semba from Angola— it all translates into a party. Super bailable.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The first Collider launched in the beautiful, historic Williamsburg Grange Hall back in 2017. It feels both magical and momentous to start something new together in this under-appreciated room, which is lovingly maintained by Grange members in the community.
DJ Bongohead (of Peace & Rhythm) spins tropical dance music before and after to help us celebrate.
Doors at 7:30PM. Non-alcoholic drinks and light refreshments served (Burgy Brews is a couple doors down if you want a drink-drink).
