VTC Presents: The Road to Mecca
March 16, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - March 25, 2018 @ 5:00 pm
The Road to Mecca is a moving story about Miss Helen Martins, an eccentric old artist, who, with or without the help of her tribe, battles darkness and despair to find her spiritual center or Mecca.
The Road to Mecca runs March 16th-18th and 23rd-25th at the Hooker-Dunham theater in downtown Brattleboro. Evening performances are at 7:30, and Sunday matinees are at 3:00. Tickets are $15 general admission, $13 for students and seniors.
**The March 18th matinee will be ASL interpreted.**
Ian Hefele (director) is ecstatic to be realizing a longtime dream of directing a South African Play in the USA. Previous directing credits include directing 10 Minute Plays at Actor’s Theatre Playhouse, staged readings at SIT, and artistic director for an English Language Theatre Company in Mozambique.
The Road to Mecca was written by South African Writer Athol Fugard during the dying days of the Apartheid Regime. This was 1985, P.W Botha was State President and a state of emergency was taking hold. Many thought the bloated bureaucracy of the Apartheid State would never end. This is the cultural and political background where our characters find themselves.
All 3 characters struggle with not communicating their true feelings to each other before it’s too late. They manage to in the end but with varying outcomes. In this current climate of increasing hate, intolerance, and outright dictator-like leadership I hope we can learn the lessons of The Road to Mecca. Humanize and accept people of all types, let them live in their Meccas and you might just find yourself on the road to yours.
