The Suitcase Junket
From the salvaged sounds of American juke joints, back porches, and honky tonks, The Suitcase Junket conjures a new sound in his essential release, Pile Driver from Signature Sounds Recordings. The Suitcase Junket is one-man band Matt Lorenz, working on a dumpster guitar and a kit of busted bottles, forks, bones, gas cans, shoes, saw blades, and an overhead compartments worth of luggage.
“Now this is the shit I’m talking about, Jack. The Suitcase Junket is a lo-fi, low-tuned, low-down blast of end-times folk blues. It’s crude; it’s magnificent. With a stage set-up that resembles a junkyard foley stage or Fred Sanford’s living room, The Suitcase Junket one man band leader Matt Lorenz incants and intones like a cross between Hound Dog Taylor and a Tuvan throat singer who has swallowed a bird. Take the singer-songwriter idiom, give it a low grade fever and a guitar and this is what you get. Captivating, mesmerizing, and gone … real gone.” Rochester City Newspaper, New York
“The Suitcase Junket is the real deal — and one of the most electric souls we’ve ever seen on stage.” — FreshGrass Festival, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art
Jaw-dropping” — Beale Street Caravan, Memphis
Philip B. Price is best known as the lead singer and songwriter behind the New England-based melancholic folk/pop band Winterpills, but his resumé stretches back into the late 80s and draws on minimalist/jagged art-rock, bedroom lo-fi pop, power pop, 70’s singer-songwriter and Brit folk.
