Michael Roberts is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter living in Guilford, Vermont. From 2008-2018 he led the Americana band Wooden Dinosaur, writing and producing ten albums with the group. During that time the band toured extensively throughout the northeast performing with acts like The Suitcase Junket, The Devil Makes Three, and Iris Dement. Wooden Dinosaur’s blend of folk, country, jazz, and old time string music frequently landed them atop lists of Vermont’s best musical acts, and NPR’s All Songs Considered wrote that “Wooden Dinosaur makes the kind of simple, stripped-down music that leaves you feeling nostalgic and longing for more.”
In 2014 Roberts, along with Wooden Dinosaur bandmates Jeff Murphy and brother Frank Roberts found themselves longing to spend more time with cold beers in old bars and formed The Rear Defrosters, now a mainstay of the southern Vermont, southern New Hampshire, and western Massachusetts roots music scenes. The band now operates as a loose collective of musicians devoted to recreating the classic sounds of honky tonk, soul, rock n roll, and early country music.
In 2019 Roberts released his first album under his own name, called Mixed Emotions, which explored Roberts’s passion for character-driven folk, country, and jazz songwriting. He is currently working on a follow-up album, due out in 2021.
