Full description:

With music that has been called “soulful”, “heart-touching” and “lyrical”, Joel Veena is an exponent of the Indian classical guitar or 20-stringed Indian slide guitar from Brattleboro itself! A journey that started with an epiphany after listening to a CD while on a study-abroad trip in Delhi has, over the years since 2007, transformed Joel into one of the dynamic young artists of Hindustani classical and fusion today. Joel’s concert tours have taken him all over India, Europe and the US while learning under and eventually performing alongside some of the greats of Indian music.

On September 12, Joel will be accompanied by tabla virtuoso Mir Naqibul Islam. Originally from Bangladesh and now living and working in New York city, Mir performs regularly with musicians from a wide variety of other genres, bringing tabla to Jazz, Middle-Eastern music and other contexts. By listening, learning and playing with musicians from around the globe, he is developing a unique musical aesthetic bringing together the musical influences of traditional Farukhabad style tabla and 21st century New York.

Together, Joel & Mir will present a concert of traditional north Indian ragas alongside Joel’s original compositions. There will be Indian snacks and refreshments available from the bar and Vidhiism will be at the venue with their pop-up Indian handicrafts bazaar.

“I play music to heal, to transmute, to bring calm and focus and to empower.”- Joel Veena
