For a small state, Vermont is big on trails. The Long Trail, Catamount Trail, and Kingdom Trails are among the state’s most legendary areas for hiking, backcountry skiing, and mountain biking. The Vergennes Community Foodshelf, located in a small red building behind the Vergennes Congregational Church, could pass for a tiny general store. The food shelf is open twice a week and is stocked with everything from eggs, milk and meat to vegetables, fruit and pet food.

When my daughter Aria and I visited Smugglers’ Notch Resort in 2023 winter was in full swing. A late snowstorm in March blanketed the mountain and surrounding area with fresh powder. We couldn’t have chosen a better time to explore this iconic resort and try a host of their winter activities from snowboarding to tubing to snowshoeing. It was the perfect time to play at Smuggs.
