BRATTLEBORO, VT — On Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1, the River Garden will transform into a cozy quilter’s paradise, with works by local quilters on display, and quilts and supplies for sale. The Expo takes place 11:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. both days, with a special 5 pm screening of The Quilts of Gee’s Bend at the Latchis Theatre on Friday.

“Our first-ever Quilt Expo has something for anyone who enjoys fabric crafts,” said Orly Munzing, Executive Director of Strolling of the Heifers, “We have vendors selling quilts of all sizes, beautiful fabrics, complete quilt kits, and quilting lessons from professional teachers.”

Faith Evans, a local quilter who has been leading quilting workshops for over 30 years, will be at the Expo both Friday and Saturday, offering ongoing demonstrations on how to make a crazy quilt square. Evans’ “Trip around the World” quilt is being raffled off as a fundraiser for the Stroll’s Farm to Table Apprenticeship Program. Tickets are available at The River Garden through December 1.

“If you are a professional quilter, a beginning quilter or don’t sew at all, there will be something interesting for you at the Quilt Expo,” commented River Garden Coordinator, Vicki Friedman, “Our Gallery at the Garden wall will be covered with gorgeous quilts the whole month of December, and some will be for sale.”

The Quilts of Gee’s Bend Film Screening

After the Expo’s first day wraps up, The Latchis Theatre will present a screening of the 2002 documentary short film The Quilts of Gee’s Bend. The film will be presented by film director Vanessa Vadim, with a question and answer session afterward.

Set in the quilt-makers’ homes and yards, and told through the women’s voices, this music-filled, 28-minute film takes viewers inside the art and fascinating living history of this uniquely American community and art form. The award-winning filmmaker will be on hand to discuss Gee’s Bend history, the quilt-making process, and the making of the documentary. Screening at 5 pm Fri. Nov. 30, by donation.
