Vermont Band Madaila Reboots with New Album ‘The Suite’

Madaila, once a promising Vermont band known for their infectious indie-dance-jam-pop sound, has undergone significant changes since their successful albums “The Dance” (2015) and “Traces” (2016). After frontman Mark Daly paused the project in 2018 to focus on family, he reintroduced the Madaila name through solo recordings that blended electronic and acoustic elements, creating a club-folk vibe.

Their latest album, “The Suite,” marks the return of a revamped Madaila, or “Madaila 2.0,” featuring a new lineup of talented Burlington musicians. Founding member Jer Coons returns but now plays guitar, supported by bassist Josh Weinstein, along with newcomers Steve Hadeka on drums, Zane Gunderson on keyboards, Will Andrews on synth and trumpet, and pedal steel player Tony Naples. While some elements of the original Madaila are present, the sound has shifted towards slick indie pop and a more adult contemporary tone.

Tracks like “By Myself” and “In the Dead of Night” highlight this evolution, showcasing Daly’s songwriting growth that incorporates R&B and soul influences. The album’s overall feel leans towards tranquility, with many songs maintaining the essence of Daly’s solo work. “Thrown Into the Fire” exemplifies the full band’s cohesion, featuring harmonious vocals and impressive guitar solos.

The change in sound reflects a maturation process for Daly, who now crafts songs more suited to the complexities of modern life. The introspective nature of tracks like “Light Ahead” stands in stark contrast to the upbeat jams of their earlier work, inviting a diverse audience to reconnect. Madaila will celebrate “The Suite”‘s release with a performance on November 16 at the Higher Ground Showcase Lounge, available on major streaming platforms.
