The Northshire Bookstore in Manchester will host Airea D. Matthews, Yale Young Poets Award Winner and Philadelphia’s Poet Laureate, as she reads from her collection of autobiographical poems, “Bread and Circus.” The collection challenges the theory of the invisible hand proposed by Adam Smith, and explores the impact of self-interest and economic failures on vulnerable populations. Matthews, a former student of economics, uses redacted texts by Smith and French Marxist Guy Debord to demonstrate how people become commodities and how this impacts the most vulnerable. “Bread and Circus” is a layered collection of poems with a range of emotions, and explores the intersection of theory and reality. Matthews, also the author of “Simulacra,” which won the 2016 Yale Series of Younger Poets Award, is a professor and directs the poetry program at Bryn Mawr College.
